GTV6 Restoration

Well had to go work on the Alfa today. I am addicted. :P Things are right on track for the body. After the initial primer we decided to prime with a special rust primer to the areas that have the problems with rust. We also used this primer under the whole Zender Kit since the body kit covers alot of the panels and mosture could collect here. This could cause additional rust problems in the future. I really did not do this before, but my associate said we might as well do it correctly since we are spending a lot of effort on making the body correct. Why take a chance. Were the body kit was screwed into the panels we filled the whole chanel with filler and sanded it smooth instead of putting the door strip that most Zender Kits have. :) We also took a lot of time making sure that the rear bumper lined up perfectly with no gaps. Needed to build up the fiberglass edges and then sand down as needed.

We just need to put the front bumper on and sand a lot more and were ready to spray. Its taking a little longer than expected for this step but the preparing work is the most important part. The pictures can not show it but the car is very smooth. :)

Here are some pictures of my progress.

Here are some more photos for everyone to view. We are just hoping that no one hits the bumpers. We have the brackets in place but before these will protect the chasis the Zender bumper will be trashed. :( This is the only thing we really do not like about the bumpers. Of course this system is alot lighter.

You should have a mould made of the bumpers so you have a backup in case (heaven forbid) someone does do it to you....

Looking good mate- really good stuff!

Looks very good. Just wondered how the american version looks a bit different. I can't remember my Australian version having the front metal bar protruding from the front of the body.

Hi Jules,

That's a good idea. :D How does one make a mold of this?

Hi bteoh,
Thanks, :) the original USA version does not have this metal bar. We made this bumper from the stock shocks that hold the original bumper on. When we originally went with the Zender Kit we thought it would be a good idea to have sometype of bumper behind the fiberglass zender bumper in case of an accident. With out the custom bumper behind the zender kit, we felt that a minor accident would bypass the designed front impact protection of the Alfa and cause more damage than necessary. :(

Hello,

We worked on the car today and put on 3 coats of red metallic paint & 3 coats of clear coat. The car is looking new now and we are very happy with the results. We are going to color sand it tomorrow and then one more coat of clear. The car will be buffed and polished and were done. The only problem that we encountered is that I lost the passanger side door lock with bracket. If anyone has an extra one I would really apprecatie it. It does not have to have the key but it would be nice if it did.

I would have posted the progress pictures today but my Treo memory crashed and I lost the pictures so I will re-take them tomorrow and post them. :D

Good Morning Gentlemen,

Went to the warehouse 9:00am NY time since everyone is working today. Have to pay for my Alfa. I re-took the pictures to post for everyone to see the progress of my project. We were going to contine to work on it today but will not be able to.

We used Glassurit paint for this project. The job is looking good and the body work is 85% completed excluding the under carriage which I have decided to detail as well. These pictures represent the job before we color sand it for the final detail and then couple more clear coats and then were done :D

We decided not to install the front bumper first but to paint it first. The reason being is that we wanted to spray the front part under the bumper as well for futher rust protection.

Here are some more pictures. :)

We were happy that there are no more moldings on the side. We think it make the for a cleaner install on the Zender kit and it appears to be factory installed.

Hi sydneyjules,
Thanks for the input on the color. I really need to get a real digital camera. I am just using my treo which really is ok for Field work but the color of my car really doesn't show to well.
I am not sure eactly what wheels or tires that I am going to use yet. Kind of still researching. I am going to use the original wheels & tires for now since I like them. However I know I will end up with some type of after market wheels for better performance. What would be you suggestions for brand, size, and offset?
What ever wheel & tire set up I go with I want it to make the car perform better as compared to just making the car look better.

Off work now so back to researching Alfa stuff. :D

I understand that the image of a GTV6, IMO, that makes me drool isn't to everyone's taste- I think they are such a pretty shape, but I strongly believe that the standard wheels are too skinny, and not large enough in diameter.

My 16 x7.5s are a good size, because you can fit 50 series rubber on them, and a good example of this is Brian Teoh's car the Introduce Yourself gallery, I think... or my link... duh....

Being 25, and enjoying many aspects of the multitude of modified car scenes in Australia, I like the old skool Drag/Circuit look you can get out of these cars- they are such a clean shape, that they need similiary un-cluttered wheels.

Some examples of my taste

The first car

The Wheels on the SA 3.0 are quite nice

I must say- I got these off a French site- I cant find the link anymore, but this white one looks great:
