Exh. Temp light problem

Post by 81GTV6RESTO »

Hello Comrades,
After putting the new GTV6 together, and doing
all the wiring checks. The Exh. Temp. light stays
lit. I have tracked down the thermocoule cable
and it seems to be disconnected and just coiled
up under the car with no cat. connection to connect to.
This light didn't come on before I took the car apart.
Any suggestions as to how to get the light off/fix with
out having to disconnect the light would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Thermocouple theory states that heating of the thermocouple element causes a voltage gradient between the refrence junction and the measuring junction.

The disconnected wires are supposed to measure the voltage across the thermocouple terminals. As the thermocouple gets hotter, the voltage across those terminals increases. Once past a certain voltage thershold the exhaust warning light should come ON.

Since there is no voltage across the terminals, the warning light should stay OFF. My sugestion is to try to short the terminals together to see if the light will go OFF. This will essentially reduce the potential difference between the terminals to 0 and if the thermocouple behaves as I would expect, then this 0 potential difference would equate to a low thermocouple temerature.

CAUTION

Before you do that, please use a volt meter and measure the voltage between the two wires. If there is any voltage > 1 V, DO NOT short the wires.

Let me know what you find out.

Cheers,

Marco
