164 Crank Pulley
Does any out there have a good US source for 164 crank pulley and crank angle sensor? I want to go to a coil pack on my GTV6 and this is supposed to be the easiest route... I think it can be a 12v or 24v 164 V6.
Oh, thats what you want to do! Well, I think the attached pictures will help some. The one on the left is a Jetronic pulley with the 24v toothed wheel attached and the other is a stock Motronic one. Note that the wheels have been turned to cater for the Q4 24v engine timing requirements.

I purchased these items a couple of years ago from the european salvage yard below. I've had mixed results with them, so be specific. I think the are located in Wisconsin or Michigan. I first saw their add in one of the Alfa Owners. Hope this helps.

I understand that late model European 75 3.0 V6 ran motronic. I assume that means that the crank pulley has the crank angle gear. Could some of you Euro folks clarify if that crank pulley would be a bolt-on and fit an earlier 3.0 V6? It is also my understanding that the 164 crank pulley will not work (bolt-on) on the earlier 3.0 V6 (original L-Jet) - belt width or...
Like Sam I'm looking for the easiest way to get the crank angle gear onto an original L-Jet 3.0 V6. I have also looked at racerpartswholesale.com, where you can buy 60-teeth crank angle gears at various diameters. However, the crank pulley on the milano is different from the gtv6, and I'm unsure of how you would attach it.

The 164 QV (S) has Motronic, check out Seb's conversion thread, he is transplanting one of those engines into his GTV6.
I personally think it would be easier to adapt a generic tooth wheel from a tuning shop then to source the CAS and wheel from Europe, those engines are quite rare.

Thinking of getting rid of the distributor and "upgrade" to coil packs on the verde (with GoTech Pro instead of Standard GoTech).

Jes,
I have a crank pulley and sensor coming to me, on the '86 GTV6, the pulley is the same type as the Milano, same as the pictures above. My friend the engineer said his shop can perform the swap and machine work, so hopefully I can get this working, but it maybe a few months before I can get to it, still need to get my Verde on the road...

Hi Jes
Why do you want to get rid of the dissy, and go to coil pack??
It's much easier to stay with the dissy on the early 75's. If you go to 60-2 wheel, you'll need to balance crank and flywheel with the new pulley. It will go out of balance if you just swap!!!!, the belts for the power steering and alternator will also now not fit, and will need the pulley wheels moved forward to line up.
You also need to modify water pump pulley to clear teeth, as well as fit front engine cover from SZ or 75 motronic (over £160 in uk), and make a blanking plug for the hole left by removing the dizzy, which will also need a bearing to stabilise the oil pump shaft.
To me it's an awful lot of effort to go to coil pack ignition, which won't bring you any power/running gains.
Do you have a specific reason for?? let me know
cheers
Andrew

Guys-guys...
1) Sam is the originator on this post; Jes is another guy (like myself) with the desire to go to coil-packs running the GoTech PRO....
Thought tha would try to clarify that.
2) Squeezing a 60-2 timing ring-gear on to a stock Milano pulley DOES NOT change the balance factor. (Andrew, I thing that you missed that part...)
Any way, on one engine I think that Sam still has the opportunity to rebalance as a package together with the lightened flywheel (like we did on the 3.7s that were built from scratch) along with all of the internals.
On his other motor, he is sticking with the stock pulley and pressing on a ring-gear....
Andrew, how's August for you to hook-up in SA...? (I'm headed back again...)

...to Alfa, or not to Alfa? That is the question...
Hi Andrew,
Perhaps you just talked me out of it! Seriously.
Anyway, it was mostly to get rid of more of the old remaining mechanical parts of the engine management system. Hereby eliminating another source for problem as that mechanical part wears. Overall, the idea was to get a more robust/reliable/... system - not that the distributor is super unreliable, but it wears and can cause problems. At least that was the thinking.
Besides, I kind of find it interesting do dig into and (hopefully) improve the system. Can't help it being an engineer.
Switching from L-Jet to Standard GoTech has already "simplified" the system tremendously.
How big an issue is the balance of the crank if I fit an aftermarket crank angle gear onto the stock crank pulley?

I don't know. I asked the only person that I thought may know.
Dawie feels that the effect of the 2 missing teeth is zero in terms of the balance factor extended that far forward and external to the motor as compared with the innertia generated by those pistons and such flying about... (Flywheel at the other end...)
