Race Tyres - what's so hot right now?
OK racers, am thinking between the following.
advan a050 205/50 (did well in Superlap) ~$1300
federal fz-201 195/50 (Glenny won Rally Tas Modern on them) ~$1200
silverstone ftz type r 195/50 ~$1200
dunlop dz03g 205/50 ~$1400
b'stone re55s 205/50 (seem popular) ~$1400
toyo r888 205/50 (not sure...?) ~$1300
kumho v70a 205/50 (as above) $?
any others worth bothering with...??
Size is either 195 or 205 to go on a 15x6 rim
Car is alfa gtv6 (190hp, 1200kg, ace driver)
thoughts?

Re: Race Tyres - what's so hot right now?
I can vouch on the Toyo R888, nice soft compound and very very good grip!
Re: Race Tyres - what's so hot right now?
Have used Silverstone, can't recommend them. Shod large pieces of the tread on my 900Kg/130Hp car... Lasted about 1 hour.
The old Bridgestone tyres (RE540) seemed to work well on heavy/powerful cars.

Re: Race Tyres - what's so hot right now?
We use the R888 on the touring series over here, over 200hp, 900kg car and FWD, they are good, they do last a racing weekend though, 2 20 min practices, 20 min qualifying, 10 min full tank test and 26 min race on a fast circuit.
Re: Race Tyres - what's so hot right now?
Have to say there's not been too much love for the r888 in other feedback so far.
silverstone chunking is correlated in other feedback (for softs and maybe mediums - i'd be going mediums, but would worry about the fronts getting knocked about...)
favouring dunlop, bridgestone and advan so far (maybe in that order...) but still interested in the federal (as its new and different, if not necessarily better...)
come on racers, let hear more!

Re: Race Tyres - what's so hot right now?
From what I'm told the V70/V700 are a tad quicker then the Toyos but wear faster and are quite terrible in the wet.
I have a set on now but they have not yet been used...

Re: Race Tyres - what's so hot right now?
My first thought is that a price for two sets ? I buy new toyos in exact size 205/50/15 for 1300 PLN/set which is roughly 454 AUD...GTV27 wrote:OK racers, am thinking between the following.

Well In my conditions I would recommend them mainly because of great value for money, I guess it's not the case here... Or maybe look for different tyre dealer?
My two cents; really nice and grippy tyres, won't last too long under hard abuse, yet mine did 50 + laps, and there was still much meat left on them. Some people claim they made them flow after 5 laps... dunno don't have a 600hp evo. I have also raced them in wet conditions and great handling too, unless you run into a large puddle.
Ps. Any Idea about Federral 595RS-R? This is some fresh stuff here and priced smilarily as the r888.
Re: Race Tyres - what's so hot right now?
We only have the bridgstone here re55. They work well for me but then again we dont have any other make. They are only directional for wet only so you can get alot of use from rotation out of them (dry). I checked that with bridgestone. The head of bridgetsone SA racing used to be one of the factory managers for Alfa Romeo in the 80 's so get alot of feed back.
If only I could get a 235 /40/ 15. My car has way to much for the 205.(widest bridgestone offer here)
Im gona watch this thread then see if some of our import friends can get in what you guys find HOT.

Re: Race Tyres - what's so hot right now?
They are not directional for wet, that is a marketing lie. Water doesn't get "pumped out the sides" like in the commersials, its swallowed by the cross section area of the tread.
If you swap them around and change direction they will wear faster, better to switch them over right/left on the rims between events if you have that problem.
I seem to wear uneven front/rear though, so switching in between axles works for me.

Re: Race Tyres - what's so hot right now?
Mats, still on wear . I swap between axles ie front to back. Then because I wear inner fronts ie do the next swop of tyres between rims ie inner becomes outer.(this is two races down the line). And when there are really shot and I go practice I chainge direction to try even my wear. The biggest culprit is left front inside as nearly all our tracks are clockwise except Kyalami.
Re: Race Tyres - what's so hot right now?
You wear the fronts on the inside?

Re: Race Tyres - what's so hot right now?
Only left. All others outside. I know thats very sad . But wearing more on braking.
Re: Race Tyres - what's so hot right now?
595rsr is apparently a sticky street tyre rather than a proper r- spec race tyre, but have not driven or or even seen them at a race meeting (maybe that says enough!)
as to prices here, shrug, that's what they cost?
am at the track next weekend and am going to pay close attention to what the quick cars in each class are using

Probably from aaaaalmost lifting the inside front and having it pointing more inward then the direction you're traveling.kevin wrote:Only left. All others outside. I know thats very sad . But wearing more on braking.

Re: Race Tyres - what's so hot right now?
bugger! beaten to it by Mats - my thought also was unloading an inside front on roll and braking causing premature wear - is a strange one thou. A bigger front bar should sort it.Mats wrote:Probably from aaaaalmost lifting the inside front and having it pointing more inward then the direction you're traveling.kevin wrote:Only left.
