I guess that's a time for update. Too bad I don't have time to get greasy hands again with my gtv6, but well... life.
I had some time spent thinkig on what to do next with alfa. And well I ended up with collecting various types of junk:



5kg flywheel



Got rid of powerflex bushings and replaced it with 105 type joints.

Finally the gaz coilovers have arrived:



New copper-nickel lines and wilwood brake proportioning valve.



Still waiting for 30mm ar-bar from faster.se

The car is in more or less desintegrated state, and waiting for roll cage, which is to happen somewhere in fall/winter i hope. So up until then anyone who was interested seeing either disaster or success of solid driveshaft will have to wait few months more

Since I see you guys posting pictures of other alfas too, then it's my turn. Bought her just few hours ago, a first stage 156 2.0 TS - lighter and more powerful than later 156s. I was looking for something practical to haul my arse around, and it ended up in the usual way

Stripped to zero. 800km+ trip to bring her to roll cage specialists. The car will be ready in less than two weeks.

"X" in the doors AND a low tube parallell to the sill? "X" in the roof? Is this a rally car?

The tube from the lower part of the main hoop to the rear shock tower/wheel house, any reason for it being conected to the upper tube in the "X" and not the lower? Please check the rules because I think FIA wants you to connect it to the lower tube, this also makes sense from a stiffness/strength point of view.

Thanks for the points Mats. I should have waited and posted the actuall roll cage variants for my gtv6, since this abve here is what they did for a rally/ hillclimb 75, and I thought I'll use it just for reference. From initial expertise we have agreed that cage on my car will be much less complex as it is a racer. Regarding the FIA regulations Mats, this company did 1000+ roll cages, have different sorts of international certificates, and do WRC cars on a daily basis, so I'm pretty sure their cage will be safe. When they come up something more specific I'll post it here and see what you guys think.

Yeah, it was a "better safe then sorry" post. If you move the car that far to get the cage done I'm sure they are good. Usually the well known and licensed firms can do things that might not comply fully with the rules and you still have a safe and homologated cage.

Money well spent.

Looks very nice and tight inside the body and being peofessional roll cage makers they can do stuff like the gussets to the A-pillars without problems. Very nice.
Still a few tubes short though? I would think you´d like a tube across the car between the lower legs of the main hoop on top of the prop-shaft tunnel and one across the car at the rear point on the wheel arches. Probably also belt tubes in the "X" as well?
Got anything in the engine bay?

I can't quite visualize where the tubes going forward from the middle of the hoop (up under the ceiling) go to. It could look like they run diagonally across to the front corners, or maybe there is a bend? If it goes diagonally you may have an issue with helmet clearance (if you are somewhat tall), but they probably thought about it.

I would have tied in the rear shock towers directly, and have a bar between the towers. Mine is like yours, although with a bar between the two bars to the wheel wells, and I ended up making additional brackets to tie in the rear shock towers, but obviously an after-thought...

Love the gussets at the A-pillar. The cage should provide a nice stiff chassis and amble protection for driver

They tie in at the corner at the top of the A-pillar, notice also how the classic "X" in the rearward tubes is mor like "/\" that ties in at the high point in the main hoop.
Looks like a rally design. Roof tubes are mandatory in rally (at least over here).

Hi, thanks for comments. This is still a work in progress, so there will be extra tubes. I have talked with the guys about it yesterday, and there will be additional tube between the rear shock towers, which will also act as a belt tube. We thought of just putting a belt tube in the main hoop, but that would make the rear of the car hardly accessible, so it's in the back. Regarding the engine bay, again after much debate, proper seam welding and a strut brace will have to do. The only solution compatibile with the "j" appendix is pretty much undoable here, you have to triangulate the tube going to the shock tower (meaning that "triangulating tube" would have to go through the wheelweel, back to the base of A pillar tube. Regarding the overall design, I just told them that this will be a race car, and the cage has to be accordant with the appendix. I have seen other of their racing designs and all were pretty much similar to this one.

Well, the harness tube would be directly behind the seat and that blocks quite a lot so I see no reasom not to have the tube. To have the harness all the way down at the tube across at the rear wheel house is way too low. Never mind that the rules permit this, it's too low for safety. It also makes the shoulder straps very long which is quite bad too (This problem I share in my car).

Since you already have the X in the main hoop the "rear seat" isn't really accessible and you might want to access it from the rear anyway. What are you goint to put there anyway? With the harness going to the rear tube the space vill be filled with harnesses anyway...

Now, put that harness tube in there...

Edit: With HANS probably be mandatory in a few years the permitted downward angle of the shoulder straps is much flatter, look at this now as it might be an issue in the future, especially if you want to sell the car later for some reason.
You will not be permitted to change a professionally built cage yourself without vioding the certificate.

Hmm the problem is I do not know at the moment which seat I'm gonna use, and the height of harness holes tends to vary... But can't you modify the cage later on provided that it is done by a certified specialist?

You don't know which seat? How can that be? Did you make a rollcage without fitting a seat?

Obviously you're way shorter then me or very brave. My main hoop is probably 15cm furter back...

The certification will probably need the same guy modifying the cage.
