Need tips building my new exhaust
Hey guys!
Just got my new 3.0 12V QV engine in the car. The engine is all stock and so are the headers. Could´nt afford a set of new ones but I still have to build a new exhaust.
So, I will be using parts from this manufacture http://www.simons.se/Katalog/Universal635.htm
The building I guess is pretty straight-forward untill the last part around the rear axle/de-dion. What du you think about 2x2" (from downpipe) --> 2.5" ---> 2.5" silencer --> rear silencer with 2x2" end pipes in the middle of the TS rear bumper.
How whould you design a simple yet soundish system? These engines want to be heard!

There is really no way to get around the rear axle without restricting the system. I suggest side exits as seen here: http://www.hiperformancestore.com/intakes.htm

Do you really think a 2,5" pipe will be restrictive Greg?

Mats, you are actually asking two questions here. Also, I assume we are talking about a GTV6, or Milano.
1. Will a 2.5" pipe be restrictive? Answer, it depends on the engine. It certainly can be.
2. Can you even fit a 2.5" pipe all the way to back without crushing it flat in certain sections or cutting up the car? It should also be easy to remove and replace it without taking the car apart. Even the ANSA system, which I think is the best for the Milano has a crushed 2.0" pipe in order to safely clear the brake caliper.

Sure, and I had a perfectly round 3" section all the way over the de-Dion in my old 75 Turbo...
I'd like to see the (N/A) V6 engine which is restricted by a 2.5" pipe...

Mats, put up a photo of that 3.0" system going over the rear axle. I would really like to see it. I was just out in the shop and I can't see how to do it on a 3.0 Milano.

Re: Need tips building my new exhaust
2.5" you can fit, I have a photo of JimK's 3.0 exhaust which I believe has something close to 2.5".

Re: Need tips building my new exhaust
I just checked Bell's book and for a 3liter engine the preferred size is 2.5" OD final pipe. There is no need for anything bigger for na and the 2.5" will fit no problem under the 75 without crushing anywhere and without fouling the caliper bleed screw (closest part).

Don't you know big is good. Bigger is better and too big is the next best after total overkill
Re: Need tips building my new exhaust
Micke, you left out the last three sizes: huge, humongous and holy $hit!!!!!

Re: Need tips building my new exhaust
Our GTV 6's which included 2.5L and 3.0L came standard from our factory here with a 2.5''final pipe. Even in full race spec(when they did not come out the side) they used 2.5 '' on the 3.0 12v GTV. Hope that adds any info.
Re: Need tips building my new exhaust
I have a 2" S-pipe at the tail end, I wonder if that will cost me a few bhp....
But noise is down.

Re: Need tips building my new exhaust
When I get home I will take a look and post some pictures. If Jim says a 2.5" pipe will fit then it will. However, it must be difficult, because I have three different Milano exhaust systems at home and all have 2.0" pipes that barely fit.

Re: Need tips building my new exhaust
Um, the GTV6 goes down the LHS of the transaxle - does the 75 go down the RHS (I know that something has it over on that side 'cause it has diffent watts links as a result, but can't remember what car it was, maybe a 90?) - anyhow assuming I'm not on drugs, could that be a difference in ease of fitment?
Oh - mine is 2 inch with lots of crush, but could easily go to 2.5 or 2.75 without a drama.
Hey Jim - what's the 'correct' sizing for a 2.8 litre?
