driveshaft anomaly

Post by imparadiso »

i have a noise coming from the rear of the driveshaft. when i
engage the clutch the noise goes away. i replaced the clutch w/
a new milano clutch and replaced all the guibos and all ancillary
parts needed for this (needed a new clutch and guibos anyway).
...support bearing and transmission mounts. the noise is back and
getting worse. one technician said it was the release bearing.
another technician(centerline) says it has to do w/ the rear yolk
that connects to the transmission. the bolts or something and
splines. any ideas?
thank you.

Sounds like you have a bad "throw-out" bearing (AKA "thrust" bearing...) about 200 plus bucks for OEM here in the US and you have to remove the front of the clutch-housing to change it...

They don't go bad too often, but they do make a racket when they do and it does go away as soon as you step on the clutch...
...to Alfa, or not to Alfa? That is the question...

You know, when you engage the clutch the speed gears start spinning.
Just another variable.

Is the noise only when it's idling as Mats is suggesting?

answer to junglejustice response:when i pur-
chased the milano clutch it came w/a new
release bearing(throw-out bearing). could it
be possible it was a bad bearing?

mat and david:the sound only vanishes when
the clutch is engaged or when the engine is
"reved-up" gradually(clutch not engaged).
what about centerline's theory for the noise:
connecting yolk of clutch to prop shaft?

thank you , william

William,

I guess I'm suggesting it may be the normal gear cluster rattle. I tried a synthetic transaxle oil and noticed a distinct increase in the idle rattle and 2nd gear crunch when changing. Changing the oil (twice) back to 80W90, I have noticed the "rattle" has gone and 2nd gear changing much improved. I have read that some synthetic oils are too "slippery" for the older style syncro rings.

Others may have different experiences.

thanks david concerning your last message. the noise was there
before i even changed to synthetic Redline. alas, i found out
i cannot down shift into second even when double-clutching.
will change back to a normal oil. but, i suspect the noise will
continue.

You should change to the right synthetic gearbox oil... ;)

I use Motul Gear 300 and I absolutely love it. great for the LSD too.

gear oil and driveshaft noise

Post by imparadiso »

thanks michael, will try the motul gear 300 before i start
"tearing apart" the driveshaft and clutch to find the anomaly.
i think the gearbox/differential oil has never been changed,so i
decided to put synthetic Redline in. the noise was there then and
now w/ the addition of the 2nd gear crunch. have to search the
oil you suggested or go back to non-synthetic.

i am running redline atf (the dextron mercon stuff) it is good. the guys over at alfa heaven swear by that juice and a tranny oil cooler with jets facing the gears.

about that noisy clutch.. i thought my throw out bearing was screaming for mercy everytime i hit the clutch, but when i took the entire thing apart (which didnt take very long... just a little bit of patience) i fount i had a bearing that needed to be re greased... put it back together no noise yet and it has been just over 1 k miles.
