Got a strange one.

On the top left hand side of the differential is as round thing that is rusty colour. In the first picture below you will see it is reasonably dry. In the second picture taken a day later there is a nice pool of gearbox fluid. Worth mentioning that I drained the fluid a couple of weeks ago. Any idea what this thingy is?

I think it is a clogged breather and should be sticking up about 2 cm.

It is sticking up about .8cm above the surface of the transaxle. Does it breath through the top or from the bottom (out the sides)?

Say what? out the sides? :?:

I think you need to take some pics that give us the general overview because it sounds very confusing.

early transaxles stick out a little bit roughly .8cm as u describe wheereas later cars stick out alot more. it is an oil breather and if oil is spilling out id have a guess and say u put too much oil. clean it and make sure it is not blocked.

My car is an 83 (MK3 I believe), would you class that as early or late.

Funny thing is I drained the oil about two weeks ago before removing the transaxle. The gearbox is curently empty. How does it come of, is it screw fit?

Thanks, Tony

It's supposed to be "filter" looking like wires all tangled up, your breather looks like it's filled with dirt or something.
