gearbox identification

Post by Tommy Cooney »

When I bought my '82 GTV6 last year the P.O. told me that he had replaced the gearbox w/ an N.O.S. unit out of a Milano. I found his receipt for the labor to install the tranny but not for the tranny itself.

My question is how can I figure out what final drive ratio it has w/o opening it up? I know for sure it has a LSD from driving it. So my thoughts are either a Verde or even better a Platinum Box. Are there any #'s on it? (I was under it today and didnt see any unless they are on top)

I was thinking that if there is no way to externally ID the box, that maybe I could put a refrence mark on the tire that lines up w/ a mark on the fender in chalk then put it in the closest gear that gives a 1:1 ratio (maybe 4th gear?) and turn the engine over and see what it gives me in tire rotation. Would this idea even work? Any way Im open to any sugestions and if there is no external way to do it Ill just have to wait till it needs a rebuild open it up and count teeth :D

You know Im a little embarrased to say I dont know for sure. The car is slightly disasembled right now as I a fabing some brackets to hold 2 modern 12'' fans to the radiator in preperation for the HOT Florida summer so I wont be able to drive it till mid week. That being said If my memory is right I think that Im at about 5500-5800 rpm in 2nd gear doing 60mph/100kph but I could be slightly off. Ill tell you for sure when I get the car back together.

It almost has to be a 4.10 box. The 2.5 would really really have a hard time pulling a Verde box´s first gear.

Ok guys thats good news. I kind of thought that, but Its nice to have some reassurance. One thing though is I have a 3.0 in my car, I have still read somewhere that the verde pulls like 50+ mph in 1st gear. I dont know if this is true, but if it is it would still lend to having a 4:10.
