Re: driveshaft conversion

Post by PietereQ »

The driveshaft is about to be completed next week :) BUT,

Now I need to ask you guys a favor, don't ask why

Can anyone tell me the distance between these bits, for the driveshaft installed IN car.

I know the profile is a bit different on the stock DS but edge is the edge. Jes, I hope you dont mind.

Measured mine at 28.4mm

However, I did notice when loosening the hanger bearing that it was sitting ± 5mm forward from the mounting studs when loose so I think that the propshaft might have been pushed too far forward into the splines.... When loosening the rear coupling there was also a small gap between the coupling rubber and gearbox yolk.

Thanks Allesandro, I understand that 28,4 mm was more or less how it was when the DS was installed in car. Few mm error is not a biggy since the CVJ slides 4 cm back and forth.

What's up with the tape? :? C'mon Mat's I've been expecting more imput from you

The pics are from early stage of balancing hence the tape. The cvj's are covered too to prevent any grease from messing the area, just a precaution.

Some very interesting photos PietereQ.

What I am seeing is a machine holding the propshaft captive at both ends and in the middle. So far so good. I am ok with the stuck on weights and stuff as well. I can also see the power end of the machine which will spin up the shaft.

What I am not seeing but would like to know is:-

1 Where and how is the actual ou-of-balance measurements indicated?
2 At what rpm speeds is the shaft spun to in order to determine that it is balanced from 1-7000 rpm? (or higher)
3 Can the machine determine the fundamental problem resonace as well as 2nd, & 3rd harmonics?
4 By the look of the temporay weight fixings, this is very much a trial and error job. Is this correct?

..er forget the Swede. He is too busy sorting out the red paint.. :D :D

I was thinking mor in the lines of that it might be difficult to balance it when you have the tape on there. Usually it's difficult to keep the props balanced after painting...

Can't be too difficult to add a hood over the joints. And why are they leaking grease in the first place? If they are leaking you will have a big problem on the car where the environment is quite a bit warmer.

Mike,

1. There's a big computer station next to the balancer, with all the data and figures form balancing. (didn't picture it, but you have nice ladders in the background instead  )
2. The max rpm the balancer makes is 5K rpm. I have called many balancing shops in entire country and, none of them had a balancer making 7K rpm. Well, transaxle driveshafts aren't their everyday stuff. Anyway, when I was at the shop they were hitting 1,8K rpm with zero vibe. I was told they also balance shafts that make even 9K rpm and no problems with balancing them with this balancer (top notch stuff i was told...)
3. Now that's something I need to look into... What resonance?
4. Dunno. The guy that was making the very balancing, was, by the looks a 80 year old grandpa, I guess, he's seen more driveshafts, than all of us here :)

Mats; the cvjs are brand new (cayenne stuff, c'mon leaking cvjs on a porsche? :D), I doubt they leak, as I said before just a precaution. Keep your fingers crossed, they seem very reasonable, I hope they know what they' re doing.

Mike not many sheep here, but lots of potatoes!
I promise when the driveshaft's installed and tested you'll have a nice picturesque story. I'm starting second university degree and the entry exams are next week - so until then no time at all.

Or if you cant wait till then, how about harrasing Mats for a change?

Cheers guys!
