Hi,
I stopped at a service station yesterday and noticed that my coolant was leaking out of the overflow.
Drove home as I was 1 K away and it was boiling like mad.
Filled it back up with less than 4 litres of fresh coolant and it was full (presuming there was no water in there that's less than half its capacity).
Today after driving some more it was boiling again but only after I stopped. Put another 4 litres in and drove home.
Guage reads a bit higher than normal on highways and about 90 degrees celcius when in a bit of traffic.
Anyone know what's going on? I've checked the oil and water and cannot find signs of head gasket problems.
filling with half capacity might signify a blockage or an air lock.
Any idea?

I always start with the thermostat...and check for air in the system by religiously squeezing the hoses as you fill the system...

I make sure I squeeze the hell out of the hoses.
I'll check the thermostat.
I'll replace the reservoir cap today to see if there's a problem there.

you can check thermostat in water on a stove. start cold and heat to boiling...thermostat should open fully....easy to see change.

Alfettish before you go ripping into the thermostat housing ( that can turn into a nasty job quickly if the bolts are seized  ) I would check to see that both your fans are working to spec. The symptoms you describe could be the result of only one fan running.

Both fans are running as they have always run. Thanks though.

Well it looks like a new cap did the trick. Thanks to everyone who helped.
