Mystery component ?

Post by Murray »

Guys I'm trying to track down a very slight ignition miss on No.6 cylinder on my 1986 GTV6.When I say slight I can just barely see an occasional flicker on my strobe/timing light at idle.I've gone through the cap rotor wires plug etc.and so far can't pin it down.I've always wondered exactly what this component does and now is the time to find out. It's bolted to the passenger-side inside fender and doesn't appear to be connected to anything other than two ground wires that are attached to it.The connecter feeding it is very similar to that which connects to the AFM.Part no. is Bosch 0-227-108-111.Can anybody explain what it is and what it does ? Thanks.

It looks like the ignition control module on my wife's VW. On her 1.8T Passat, it fires the spark plug coil packs. (And it failed recently).

I think it is the ignition amplifier.

Ok thanks. Now which of the components in the image below is it and what does it do ? I have an aftermarket (Jacobs) coil and the Alfa schematic is weird in the way it shows the wires running between the various components.

#4 is the distributor with its Hall effect signal, #3 is the advance module with the stored advance map, #2 is the coil. and #1 is the actual "electronic ignition" power module which handles the high primary coil current. These power modules are practically indestructible and have been used in umpteen million cars, a Bosch success story. In AR, they were first used in Alfasuds, when points disappeared and from then on in almost every model made, except Motronic equipped cars. The module is so good, it has been copied by other car-part companies in large numbers and in the exact same package.

If you find that the ICM is the problem, you can buy non-Bosch replacements. HUCO make knock-offs for a fraction of the price.
