Speedo problems

Post by x-rad »

My speedo spins up to 40mph then drops to 0mph, and then sometimes picks up again and jumps to 10mph. Speeds seem fairly accurate. My tranny sender is a three wire electrical unit(+, signal, ground). The positive current is steady, ground is clean. Any ideas?

Anyone use a two wire speedo pulse generator for 85' year trannies?

I had this problem recently with my '84 GTV6. The solution was in the instrument itself, which was sent away for repair by a specialist (not cheap). This initially cured the problem, but it recurred again very shortly afterwards. The final fix was to re-repair the instrument and install a new sender (less cheap!). It has been fine seince (18 months so far). It appears that the sender was behaving erratically, sending a spike that was damaging the instrument and causing the fault in the instrument.

Hope that this helps.

Thanks for replying,
Where did you get a new sender? Did an aftermarket one fit?
