Tim I agree with you that Amsoil makes good stuff.I'm an "old school"kind of guy and have always stuck with Castrol products and have been very satisfied. If I wasn't having any consumption problems I'd still be running 20/50 Castrol Dyno.It took my engine 240k miles and the bottom end didn't need rebuilding ( I did it anyway) If oil and filters are changed regularly there is likely very little "real world" difference between quality oils.Like so many things today marketing hype and the www lead us in many different directions depending on the circumstances.

Murray,
Yes, same piston and liners (w 210k miles) and Total Seal rings, I think someone said use the TS compression rings and Deves oil ring. I have not done a compression test, I guess I should, I did do a dyno run with it and it had a very smooth power and torque curve, and comparable peak HP reading (we had 3 GTV6's there). If I can get my oil consumption to about a quart every 2k miles, I will be happy! Spark plugs are not too bad to change, so maybe every 15k on them, depends on how they look after the change to a different oil.

Sam it sounds as if our circumstances are very similar.Let's keep comparing results.I too would be satisfied with 1qt./2k miles. That's what I was getting prior to my rebuild
I checked my plugs last night with about 300 miles on the NGK's and they look much better (nice tan brown colour) so now it's a question of seeing how long the Castrol 5/50 will stay in the engine.

What was the reason for the rebuild? Just curious.I too would be satisfied with 1qt./2k miles. That's what I was getting prior to my rebuild

Jes basically it was because I'm a fool who doesn't know when to leave well enough alone
I figure that an engine with that much mileage must need a rebuild.Compression was down to 150 on all 6 and I needed a winter project.Figured I could gain 5-10 hp.Ultimately I could have got away with new valve seals-period.It was fun to do and now I have the confidence to do it again and given my track record that's a good thing
I also learned that Alfa builds damn good engines.

Just curious. I could see myself do it for similar reasons
I've considered locating a non-running 3 liter, hopefully cheaply, and do a rebuild just for the heck of it - when I have spare time to burn, like that is ever going to happen with a 3-year old with tons energy. Anyway, kind of curious about the details...

My oil consumption was a quart every 1k miles, and that is the reason for my rebuild, but once I got into the engine, I found the previous owner had used stop leak in the cooling system and everything had been coated with the stuff, so I felt good about the rebuild, but the engine was still in great shape. I have a rebuilt set of 2.5 heads lying around, I think that sounds like another fun winter project, just don't know what I will put the engine into...
Murray, keep me up todate on the Castrol and I will let you know how the Amsoil works out.
