Re: Front mounted tranny
Oh yes another thing these corvette gearboxes aren't really bigger than alfa boxes they're a little thicke in diameter.
While I'm in here let me ask what is the weak point/s in our boxes?

Re: Front mounted tranny
Can't a beefier ring and pinion be fabricated? Better materials maybe?

Everything is possible, it's just a question of money.Zamani wrote:Can't a beefier ring and pinion be fabricated? Better materials maybe?
It will most definetly be cheaper to buy a Maserati gearbox though.

Re: Front mounted tranny
So what's the maximum power (& torque) a standard Alfa transaxle will take?
Re: Front mounted tranny
Isn't the problem with the transmission with the studs pulling out, not so much the ring and pinion giving up?
If it is the R&P, in the ae86 world, making custom ring and pinions doesn't seem that expensive, there are companies willing to make them in batches of 10 and sell them for like $400 USD.

A 15" pinion with multiple splines and bearing positions?
Sounds a bit optimistic to be honest.

When you're pumping 400 neddies plus, do you really think the weight of the torque tube is going to be an issue when it provides all the other gains?
I don't think so.
What is not clear to me is whether this is supposed to be for a track or a road car. If its for a road car, there would be serious questions whether you woud ever get transport department approval and/or insurance to cover it. So step one is to sort through the objectives first.
I think this discussion started with a need to cater for 400hp plus neddies which needed a transaxle/gearbox to deal with it and stay together.Torque tube is heavy.

Re: Front mounted tranny
Here in America or maybe just the northeastern area which I'm familiar with, it really dosen't matter how much horse power( twin turbo Supras butting out 1200+ HP) or even how many modifications your car has,
as long as your car passes emissions test and safty inspection your good, The cops might bust you for having your car to low or your exhaust to loud, but that about it.
I know guys driving around with full roll cages and two seats in there car , interior completly gutted, nothing but dash and two seats.
pay your insurance keep your vehicle inspection up to date and your GOLDEN.
A while ago I was driving up I95 north and A Porches 911 turbo full rollcage completely coverd in sponsored decals an inch of the groundlooked like it had just pulled out of a grand turismo race, nothing on it's dash looked stock (including the dash itself that was coverd in black foam looking matirial) thunder by me.
Thats when I said to myself HELL you can drive Practically anything on the road as long as your insured right (I Guess).

Just another thing, the car was not soposed to be this big monster build It's just turning out that way, Come on you know how it is (Wellll...... While I'm in here I...Might as well do this to it , and a little that just to balance that out , and since I'm doing that I might as well do this as well. You get the picture.

Re: Front mounted tranny
a T56 new is about $2000 (normal type not transaxel)
I think used they should be a lot cheaper. and if the 6th is taller then say the 3L Alfa box I bet it would pay for it's self in gas saved in no time.
anyone have the wight of a Alfa box?
the t56 is like 115-129LBS
Factory remanufactured T56 units. They are priced from $1300.00 to $1650.00
sounds a lot cheaper then a Alfa box for reference IAP charges $2190 to remanufacture a Alfa spider box. +$700 core.
I did not find the wight with the diff for the t56
