Boost!

Post by 5yearplan »

I am torn between wanting to swap my stock engine with a 24v 3.0L, or just building and boosting the stock engine. so here are my questions.

1)How much boost can the stock engine take reliably, with a stand-alone ecu, and intake and exhause upgrades?
2)How much boost can the stock engine take reliably, rebuilt with low compression pistons, head work, stronger internals, and stand-alone etc....
3)How much boost could the 24v 3.0L take reliably, rebuilt like above
4)How high does the 2.5L 24v rev reliably
5)How high does the 3.0L 12v rev reliably

If money plays a part in your decision, there's no getting away from Greg Gordon's SC kit on a stock 3liter engine! I don't think any other solution can even come close to the hp per dollar figures he has to offer.

what about a small single turbo setup(with internal wastegate,no IC,low boost,big A\R turbine for rev-ability) ,Stock 12v + 4-6psi with ignition and fuel corrections?

I'd go the GG/JK supercharged route.

Greg Gordon's kit with aftermarket EFI would be my choice. You can make serious power with that kit.

Chen,

Are you calling it quits???

5yearplan: It all depends on who builds it. Nothing is as simple as that and boost is the most difficult factor to quantify because it differs totally on what stuff you use and how you put it together.

I understand that, I'm just looking for an estimate, Wondering what people's experiences have been.

As Mats said, it's a tough one to answer. I can't really go out and test all those engines to destruction.

I can tell you I feel 7 psi is very safe on these motors even without intercooling or water injection. I ran 10 psi with water/alcohol injection on my GTV6 all summer in Texas and took it to two track events and it held together.

a standard engine will be able to handle 6 psi safely even without any intercooling.
when you change the pistons and internals you could go as high as the price of your internal changes .

Thanks. Also How High can these engines rev reliably, the limiter seems a little low.

My mechanic has built himself a 12v 3.0 with alloy rods, 7.6:1 comp, custom cams, and serious balancing and valvegear, and he will not be happy until he has it revving to 8k under 30psi.

I will let you know if he splits the block... but its been a long running project.
Fixing it bit by bit....

Why would someone go with such low compression?
