Well, parametric and parametric, if you have the "privilege" to work with the stuff I do you know that KISS rules, over-parameterized models is newbie stuff... ;)
Fast, stable, changable and updatable models means less parameters.

Anyhoo, the model should be easy enough to work with once I clean it up and make it ready for release. :)
I might do a couple of different versions just as a base for discussion.

Very nice Mats :)
Does anybody know what the SCCA or FIA specifications are for tube gauge and diameter?
What is the best type of steel to use? (best ratio of rigidity to weight)

Depends on the weight of your car. Double check the SCCA rule book, but from what I remember for a full cage, 1.5 OD DOM tubing for cars with less than 2700 lbs and 1.75" OD DOM tubing for cars with 2700 lbs or more.

Is that factory weight or actual weight? I plan to have my Milano well below 2700, but we will see...
Zamani, what is the current weight of your car?
Anyone else know the wieght of their 75?
Weight in stock trim?

Thanks for the information

I think what the factory quote is quite accurate. A Verde abs & sunroof is about 3000 lbs (wet) (tested on those 4 corner race car scale). A gold would be about 2900 lbs. I'm guessing my car with euro bumpers, no A/C ompressor, no condensor, and custom exhaust weigh about 2750-2800 lbs.

I'm probably going to put in race seats, and lighter wheels to get it down to 2700-2650 lbs.

I plan to strip my interior to the point that it will be quite bare. I will install gold style manual brakes which I think will save some weight. I may remove ps. Then I plan to make some carbon body panels to take things up to 11. Oh, and maybe a lighter battery(in the trunk).
Getting my weight down is rather important to me. It is the only modification that improves every aspect of performance...well almost every aspect.

Oh, I forgot to add custom exhaust which is now in the works. That should save a little weight.

Is that factory weight or actual weight?

What I meant was do they take weight reduction modifications into accout when judging the weight of the car and asessing its safety requirements? Or will my car always be a 3000 pound car in the eyes of the race track governors even if I get it down to 2600pounds?

Are the factory Recaros reasonably light? They didnt feel very light the other day when I took them out of the car to get them repaired, but I am not a good judge of such things.

The factory seats are VERY heavy. Last time I weighed my Gtv6 seats they came in at over 20kg each !

Weight issues

Post by Reale »

Check out the Odyssey PC680 battery, it is about 15lbs. Great way to lose some weight.
Team Dynamics Pro Race 1 wheels, 13lbs and $170 each. Excellent value.
Hood and trunk lid/hatch-great place to lose weight by substituting carbon fiber.

A note about HP to weight:
Consider that a 3000lb car with 250HP has a 12:1 wt to hp.
Increase the HP by 15, and that becomes around 11.32:1.
To achieve a comparable ratio by weight loss will require you to lose 170lbs.

Al
Thanks for posting about that battery. I will definitely be looking into that one before long. Good point about hp to weight ratio. To reiterate what I have already said, adding hp only serves the purpose of improving hp/weight ratio.
When you lose weight you improve aspects of performance in addition to hp/weight.
How much weight am I going to add with a roll cage? I know that it depends on how elaborate the cage is, so how much does a heavy cage weigh?

Cage weight

Post by Reale »

Hello-
I agree with you absolutely, weight loss can really change handling, depending on where it is lost (or moved). Especially unsprung.
Anyway, about the cage-good question, since I did not weigh my car before we put the cage in. Easy(ish) to figure out, as long as you know the weight per foot of the tubing you use. What tubing depends a little on the sanctioning body (if any). When I first built my car, my minimum weight dictated using 1.50" diameter tubing with a .120 wall thickness. Now I could go with the .095 wall thickness. BUT, if I knew what I know now, I would probably have used 4130, 1.375x.095, since 4130 is lighter.
My car weighs about 2400lbs with me in it (160lbs).

Depends on how complicated the cage is. The one in my 75 (pics in some other thread last week) is ~35-38kg (80lbs)

Here´s a cuople of pics of my cage. Weight was 58kg uncut and a good guess in-car weight should be about 49kg.
This cage is approved för standard racing i Sweden.

There is more pics of it here:
