Volvo 140 series balljoint is a bit big on the outside :( ... You need to enlarge the hole to 50mm to press that in. Might be a bit scary as there is not that much 'meat' in the original LCA.

Mecedes W114 balljoint is next for measuring...

Here are some pics and dimensions of the ball joint. I've removed the rubber boot to give us a better view. It's 44m diametre fit into the LCA. SO it leave enough meat on the LCA.

That's exactly how i pictured making it.. :) Now w ejust need to know where the balljoint came from.

44mm is almost stock size, strengthwise that should not be a problem. :)

I must say my Volvo balljoint looks alot stronger due to its size. To bad the LCA won't accept it. :(

One of the changes required will be to make the front rims a 5 hole 98PCD, currently 4 hole 98PCD. The back rims are alreadt 5 hole 98PCD. I'm concerned about the this weaking the rim structure and or the new holes being very close too or even worse encroaching on and enlargening a current hole.

Any one had expereince with this before or can give me guidance as to the do's and don'ts when attempting this. I'll sent them in to a wheel repair shop, but still I'd like your views.

The other option  is to get other rims.........anyone in RSA (Jhb/Pta) area have a set of 16" either 10J or 11J 98/5. I'll manage to two rims if you don't have a set.

Go see Craig at Hi tech in Alberton south . Expensive but their work is thoroughly checked (x rayed etc) . Most important make sure the spigot of the rim fits perfectly on hub as this is often a cause of failure around bolts . I had new insert put in and they must be pressed in with a loctite , other wise the insert expands differently to rims and can stick on hub at race track . Also put copper on hub but very little as can get hot and liquid which runs onto caliper .
Sav also has spare inners - I think .
Post a pic of your stub axles to confuse us as that was the key to perfect set up . We never did identify those . All thought it was 119 , then 105 but maybe 750 series .

Kevin, there's a mag repair place close to us, in Jules street. The option they've suggested (they showed me a race rim they were busy with) is to insert solid aluminum plugs with grooves on the side to ensure it does not turn or come off (20mm diameter) into the current holes. They drill the hole to 18.5mm and press fit the plug in. Then they drill new holes. So there is no welding, heating and coolling off, other than the machining and drilling. Yes there will be 2 holes new that will be damn close to these inserts.

Yeah , generally as a rule I never trusted anyone in Jules street . I still think you should go see Craig at Hitech as they do all the mags for the racing industry and if there have been failures he would be first to know . This car is producing serious G ' s so as Mats said if we can limit the stupidity start with the best . They also got a ISO 9000 so at least their quality is good .
Been front rims its a less risk than having to do the rears which are already correct pcd so that's one positive . I have only seen one rim disintergrate around the hub and murphies law it happened just a I overtook a 101 series Guilietta down the mine shaft section at Kyalami . They guys steel rim had finally fatigued over the 40 years on that car . He was also running slicks on those steel rims . I ended overtaking him between the rim that just came off and his car at 140 km/h on that off camber sweep . I'm not sure who was more scared , me or Cabrita . We still laugh nervously about that incident because it could have gone horribly wrong for both of us .

That's big graft . Good going . Check braded brakes hose moves freely away from shock coils and ones not kink when full lock .

You have no idea, the amount of work. There were time I was kicking myself for starting it, as there was no turning back. The sobering though of it all....when all was said and done I ended off where I started as it entailed mostly replacing of items...........the positive.......safety.......the most important aspect of all and that made it worthwhile.

Kevin, yes I did check the bradied brake pipes for clearance, had to reroute the one pipe.

Picture of the rim after change over from 4/98 to 5/98.
Fitted Ferodo DS2500 brake pads, couldn't get hold of DS 3000.
Braided hose was rerouted to clear the tyre and spring.
By the way I also had to have the pins holding the brake pads machined as the calipers came without the pins.
