lightweight starter motor

does anyone out there know of an easy fit starter motor to fit a gtv6?
i need something that has less diameter than the standard one, like that of a 164.
i am running into clearance issues with the exhaust.
i was hoping someone out there may have done some homework and would be able to offer a solution.
what do the other racers out there use?

Keep the original starter motor and cut the floor out to make room. This one has a 90mm tube cut in half and welded into the floor which accommodates a tunnel for the exhaust pipe which must be lagged with insulation.

thanks MD for that.
had a look and decided id make an adapter for a 164 starter motor.
the 164 starter is 3mm longer than the gtv starter, so i made a 3mm packer plate/adapter that picked up all of the mounting points.

it sits very close to the block but think it will be ok

plenty of space for the exhaust

have tested it and seems to work well.

you mean up by the engine mount?
iv never run one,
is it a problem with these?
i can easily make some form of support.
it would probably make sense as this set up could possibly be prone to extra stress.

I think a rear mount would ensure less stress on the front mounts and come up as a nice job overall.

cheers MD,
ill make something up that picks up a stud on the engine mount, even if just for peace of mind.

Many cars don't use a rear support for the starter.
My F150, 924 turbo, Audi A6 etc... don't have rear support, but just 2 bolts. Just make sure it's torqued correctly. However since you are using a spacer and probably want that peace of mind the add a bracket.

Do the gears mesh properly (flywheel and starter)? If it does, I'll just save the trouble of getting an SZ starter from Europe and adapt a 164 starter in place.

my starter conversion is working very well.
the thickness of the spacer needs to be about 3.5-4mm to ensure the pinion doesn't plunge too far.
i have done 3 race meetings so far and its been perfect.

cheers

Ben

Do you have a more detailed photo of the bracket?

not that i can find sorry.
i did take a few pics when id finished it, the best of which are already posted.
i used some flat steel plate. the top bolt bolts straight through the plate and starter. the bottom bolt that bolts through the bell housing is plug welded into the plate and then the 164 starter bolts up the top bolt and then 2 m8 bolts that only bolt through the plate.- hope this makes sense?

you have to be careful to maintain the same centre for the starter so the pinion is in the same place. to make it all fit nicely it means the starter is rotated around so the solenoid is very close to the block.
im having problems posting pics at the moment. but ill try and find a few more that will help.
