Seb´s GTV6 3.0QV conversion.

Post by Seb »

Hi guys!

Since we have a brand new forum where it´s easy to post pictures, I thought I´d share some with You.

As I´ve mentioned in the old forum I´m in the middle of putting a 3.0QV engine from a 164 in my ´83 GTV6.

I´ve decided to use the Motronic instead of the stoneage L-jet, wich doesn´t make it easier! Still working on getting it conected. (Will greatfully take some advice here) :D

I´m also gonna use the 164QV runners and plenum, wich results in some modifications.

In this thread I will post some pictures of the work so far and fill it up as work goes on.

First a pic of the car in question. Enjoy!

Seb

Some moifications were needed to make the 2.5 oilpan fit on the 164 engine... Not too hard to fix though.

Since the 164 dizzy is placed om the back of the cylinder bank and doesn´t fit in the GTV6, I had to use the dizzy from the 2.5. It had to be gutted to only distribute spark.

Well, this is a quick runthrough. On the second day after starting the 3.0 was in place.

There´s stilla lot of work to be done though. Had to take the head of last night to change the gear to the oil pump/distributor, since it´s faster spinning on the QV engine. Doesn´t make wonders with the timeing when the dizzy does 1,5 turms when the rest of the engine does one (1). :?

The modified plenum is ready aswell. It has been shortened a bit and will get a 180 bend before it goes of to the air filter. Below a pic of the plenum as it turned out.

Thats the sum up so far. I will continue this thread with new pics and info as work goes on. Many thanks too Dennis De Rooy for all the tips and advice!

´Til next time! /Seb

Good to see you're making progress on the engine! If you need any other tips/advice, you know how to reach me! Perhaps it's better to post questions here, so we can have a tutorial on how to place a 3.0 QV in GTV6

Good luck!

Will do Dennis!
Taking the head off worked fine, and I got the oil pump gear loose too. Now I just need to do the same on the donator 2.5 engine :?

Also I need to get the cam wheel of to be able to remove the upper engine mount from the 164. Not too good looking! Got the center nut off last night, but the wheel is stuck like crazy! I tried knocking on it, but no result. Any tips?

Will keep y´all updated!

I am planning on doing this same exact conversion this winter. :D A few questions for ya...

What did you have to do to the 2.5 oil pan to make it fit onto the 3.0 block?

Did you use a spacer on the flywheel or starter? If so got any pics of it?

What did you use for a flywheel?

More to come

Flipping the Plenum!

Post by junglejustice »

Hey Seb, Nice job so far!

Hey, I am perplexed by the decision for most of the guys who do this conversion to use the 164 intake plenum. What is of even greater interest to me is the decision for welding that awkward 180 degree bend onto thje 164 plenum...?

I would rather use the Milano center-mounted intake plenum with larger intake runners! (Dyno proven to deliver better hp numbers than the 164 plenum... (Looks nice to me too) - in the middle of the motor - symmetric...

If you HAVE to use the 164 setup, how about you just flip the chrome runners around; lay the 164 intake plenum over the left-side valve cover - now you have your 164 intake plenum already facing forward!!!

No welding/modifying there and now you can reserve your welding time for something practical like relocating the oil filler-cap over to the front of the right-side valve cover where it needs to be any way....

You also eliminate the long 180 degree curve and the long intake-hose distance from the right front all the way around the back of the motor... The intake is now right up front on the left (on a Milano where there is now hopefully NO battery) and lots of room for a cold-intake box!

Just me thoughts!

Hats of to you for taking this on and a job well-done so far!
...to Alfa, or not to Alfa? That is the question...

Hey guys!

Nice to see a few of you take interest in my work, thanks!

81GTV6: I used a 4mm spacer on the flywheel. I don´t have any pictures, but the spacer is 4mm and has the same diameter as the connection in the pic below (the one with 8 holes). Fits right on there.

junglejustice: There are a few reasons why I used the 164QV plenum and runners!
1. We had the discussion and a combination of the facts that the runners from the QV is bigger/no modifications needed and the volume off the plenum is optimal for the engine resulted in... well You know.
2. I actually think it looks good! I like seeing the crome runners. It doesn´t bother me that it isn´t centered.
3. Got all the welding and making of the plenum/180 bend done fo free by a friend that owed me :D ... no cost!
4 .Also, in sweden we prutty strict rules about what can be done with engines. We have to have our cars checket for smog/safety a.s.o. every year. I wanted to be able to use the original air filter box at these occations.
5. Making larger intake runners to fit the original plenum seemed like more work than making the 180 bend.

Anyways, what I need some help with at the moment is how to hook up the Motronic in the GTV6. If anyone can help me out there I´d be vary happy.

Will return soon with more pics. / Seb

My 3.0L 12V is installed and running in my 85 GTV6. Here are a few photo's of the process. I made new intake runners, bored out the 2.5 plennum and made a new intake with K&N filter. I used the 3.0L injectors and installed Megasquirt.

A few things to look out for with the conversion, the whole engine block is 4mm shorter than the 2.5.
Starter motor front mount
Rear heater hose connector
Flywheel spacer
Rear engine mounts.
