1.8 TB camshaft advice?

Friends 75 have eaten it's intake camshaft. I saw recommendation for 105.48 cams, but we cant find which exactly will do the best job. There are different cams with 105.48 mark? What lift exactly we must look for? Is it a camshaft from 1.8 carb?

Any advice would be of great help. :)

What are the specs on the engine? Stock turbo and injection?

Mitsubishi TD04
4 ignition coils (wasted spark mode)
Front mounted intercooler + modified plenum from 75TS
Injectors 320 cc
VEMS

This is what i got from alfabb...

cams that i think jim k. suggested and their specs and application:

Specs for the 105.48.03.200.01 cams:
valve timing - 41/60-54/35
clearance - .018" In, .021" Ex
crank duration - 281* In, 269* Ex
overlap - 76*
lobe centers - 99.5*
duration @ .050" - 230*
lift - 10.1mm

application: Euro S2 1750s & 2ls w/carbs.

imho, C&B cams are superior to this because they have less overlap and higher lift which is good for turbo engine also sharper lobe centers...

i think rev limit can be set higher on c&b cams with a good balanced engine and get better overall performance and drivability....

Hmmm, I see same mark for AR 1.8 carb camshaft but it is written that lift is 9.5...? :?

maybe its a typo in the post...

americans are referring to them as "euro" cams...

post with specs is here:

+0.5 to 0.6 valve clearance...

Note that the stock 1.8T cams are listed too, 8mm intake and 9mm exhaust. Absolute rubbish! And I can see how you would have thought that the stock cams are "eaten" if you measure 8mm. :)

Get something with some lift, with a TD04 you should look for something with low duration so you can set them up with less overlap, the Mitsu turbos are very restrictive in the turbine. Good thing you can set the cams independently, not like the 12v v6!

I know that factory lift is 8mm for intake side, but there can be clearly seen that two camshaft lobes are damaged.

Why do you think that TD04 is restrictive?

They are. Tiny in size and made for 4-valve cars (i.e. engines that can take a lot of back pressure) with boost from 1400RPM...
They are very small in turbine size (mass flow) compared to the stock turbo for instance.

I don't see anything wrong in early spool, specially on Alfas old 1.8 which is dead without boost.

Turbine size is smaller od T3, but much more effective. I'm not too familiar with turbo's - but this turbo was recommended by one really serious turbo Saaber guy from your country. :)

Yeah, the Saab-guys think they are great, they also have 4-valve heads with camshafts developed to work with those specific turbos and 9.3:1 CR...
Some very funny stuff happens when they change to a turbo with a larger turbine, they make more power! 8)

With a low compression 2-valve head the Mitsu TD04 turbine is not the best choice for a high-power engine IMO. It's cheap though, and easily available (that's why all the Saab-guys love them).

Is the td04 really so restrictive?

I haven´t measured or calculated it but they are originally mounted on 2,3 litre engines so should they really be to small on a 1,8?

There are two turbine housings on saab five and six(someone said it´s cc?) and they have the small t25 flange.

If the turbo has t3 flange it is most likely from a 2,5 litre volvo with a seven housing, i have one of those on my 2 litre saab and i really don´t want more lag.

The question is probably if you want hp or lag?

"Restrictive" is relative. What works at mid revrange on a 4 valve head engine that is set up in all ways to work with that turbo is one thing. On a less efficient engine that needs longer duration cams to flow it's not a perfect match.

The Saab engines are high CR (9.3:1) and can take huge amount of back-pressure due to the fact that the cams are really short in duration. when you put on a larger turbo it all needs to be changed to adapt, you would probably get less lag if the engine was adapted to suit it. I have a Saab too but woth the GT17 turbo which is about the size of a fist. It's useless over 4000rpm and I STILL think it's laggy. My 155 V6 is WAY quicker at all revs.

You sure can put a TD04 on an alfa, I had a 16T with a #7 turbine on my 75T and while the top end was improved due to the larger compressor the turbine was very restrictive and was glowing after just short drives. I felt that the turbo was better then the standard unit but it was still not perfect for the top end performance and it was difficult to get the boost level stable and the same at all gears and loads.
If you want to build a caravan tower, do it. 8)

Anyway, the turbine numbers are the entry area in centimeters square.
and those Saab engines would show a lot higher power figures with some real turbochargers. ;)

put a nice big Holset and some big injectors on the Saab engine and get some Trionic magic going to release an easy 400+ bhp... :D
