Barry's 164 LS (24 valve) tensioner mods

Hi Barry:
How difficult is it to do this mod?
Can you provide directions/hints/tips? For instance, what size is the bolt and does it protrude all the way through the barrel? It looks like the part that is applying tension on the adjuster lever is the old component?
Thanks!

Mike,pretty straight forward here..
1x 14mm bolt,2 nuts and a 14mm tap.
14mm because that's the diameter of the bore once everything is cut off .
The oil reservoir does not have pressure in it,so no danger there..
The bolt does not protrude all the way through ON THIS SPECIFIC ONE.
I have done some where the bolt goes all the way through though.
Important to have a lock nut on the bolt as well.

Barry, this one you redid for me with the bolt sticking out with the locknut. Even though they both work the second option is bullet proof.
Got three of these tensioners now on various engines including my 164.

How much tension do you put on the cam-belt?

Pull up all the slack, then release or tighten until you can twist the longest section through 90 degrees.Thats it.

I take it that you meant to say >..the belt tension should allow a 90* twist and no further (and no less) <
Probably worth reminding new readers that this set up requires that the ultimate tension comes from the engine reaching operating temperature and the block expanding.
That is why it is important not to rev the engine hard when cold as it may cause belt skip and catastrophic valve timing problems.
...had one for years . It's great.
