2.0L GTV engine fire

Post by Simon Francis »

Hey all,
After lurking around for about a year i finally joined when i purchased my first car (an alfa of course) and now need some help.
I broke the first rule of car buying when i got the car (a 1984 2.0L GTV), i bought it sight unseen over the internet. When I picked it up i was a bit dissapointed to find that it has had a minor engine fire (see pics below), also the owner had lost the keys and the windscreen needs replacing, none of which was mentioned in the add.
First assesment of damage, burnt HT leads, distributor cap melted, fuel line between carbs and filter missing (i think this is how the fire started, line split spraying fuel onto dist), coil LT leads burnt plus some other small hoses burnt. My question is have i missed anything? it all looks repairable but i just want to make sure. Also does anybody know of a good place to get the recquired parts? i live in Ballarat VIC Australia. Thanks for your help

Also in the last of the above pics, there are two wires on the left with conectors on that conect to the box shown below, This does not look standard (it was duck taped to the parcel shelf) so could some body please tell me why it's there? the box is bot conected to anything else, a black wire from it is dangling in the passengers foot well and a white wire is just loose in the engine bay, Thanks again

:P
Rubber/plastic components in the carbs could be fried, so could their rubber mountings.
Air filter could be burnt.

That multi spark thing isn't standard but I'm not sure what it does. Maybe it starts fires.

It can start fires, that it's sole purpose actually. 8)

Probably the only good consumer product made in the USA.

It's a ignition amplifier thingamajig put in between the breakers/amplifier and the coil, feeds the coil a much higher primary charge and makes the spark VERY sparky indeed. I once forgot about it and had the lead fron the coil to the dizzy off while cranking. The spark jumped ~5cm to ground and there was a spectacular light and sound show.
My racecar drove fine with 5mm gaps on 3/4 plugs, the center electrode was completely eroded.
