new timing belt- whine in the front of the motor!
i have just replaced the timing belt!
i just started up the car and there is a whine i have never noticed before!
is this something that happens when a timing belt is new or is the belt perhaps too tight?
i am using a rebuilt hydraulic tensioner-
any suggestions out there that might help me fix this or maybe some people that can confirm that this is normal!!

Ben,
Provided you have the correct belt, the whine usually indicates the belt is too tight. Remember also the belt is de-tensioned by the hydraulic unit immediately on startup. If you can you strum a tune on it with the engine stopped, I'd back it off a bit.

I've been down this same path with my car. I replaced the belt, the whine began and so I proceded to try different tensions. To eliminate the whine in my case the belt would be too loose, I have a fixed style tensioner. I spoke to an alfa mechanic and he has driven the the car and seemed to think there is no problem, however, I'm not sold on the noise myself but it's been there for a couple of years now, I'll be replacing the belt again soon so I'll see how I go this time.
So, in conclusion that was a pretty pointless post on my behalf !

For what its worth,go solid,mechanical and peg everything so it wont come loose..If the belt whines,its too tight..
A 90 deg twist on the long side is good-make sure your crank drive is not worn,most are..

Dont drive it too long with the whine..they're strong but it will break..

think it was just too tight. i loosened it off a bit and seems much better.
ill try the 90 deg twist trick too. may still be a bit tight.
the whole belt change was well worth the effort! found a split vacuum advance line!!! its amazing what i bit of ign advance does to response and power....
so far the tensioner is holding all its oil too!!!

It's pretty tight to bend it 90deg too, if you're able to turn it somewhat less but feel that you could do more if you had the space (and the whine is gone), you should be safe. I have yet not read about anyone having the cambelt break when changed within intervals on theese engines, but plenty that had the belt skip some teeth caused by leaking tensioners greasing up the beltbenski105 wrote:cheers guys!

Spray motor starter (flammable gas, http://www.clasohlson.se/Archive/images ... 085232.jpg ) at every rubber part to search for air leaks, the engine would react the same when you spray on a leaking hose as it does if you spray it into the intake, happy hunting
