I managed a brief visit to SA two weeks ago to fetch junior from the body shop to bring it back to my dads place . Even though the engine is lying loosely in the car I had managed to put the steering box back in with little effort . I guess that's because the starter motor and the carbs are off . I doubt its possible to do it if their still in . Only 105 gurus will be able to advise on that .
Some pics of car at lake avenue to follow and collection of car .

Not to detract from this junior but I did notice a very good condition GTV 3.0 undergoing a bare metal restoration in the back of the workshop . I will have to wait for the owner to comment as he's on this forum . Now I won't mention names but lets just say he's been struggling to come to grips with the front while drive Alfa on the track . :D

I have done a bit of work on the Junior with my Dad in my brief visits to SA to catch up on some warmth . Actually it was cooking at 40 degrees but good thing the swimming pool was only a few feet away :D . However I'm typing this back in UK at 0 degrees procrastinating over putting the gearbox back in the 3.7 GTV . I have posted Some pics here of work done but I must say it does take time figuring where certain trim go and what should be under them etc . I might have put together a whole bunch of gtv6s but it's still a learning experience on the 105 series . If any of you guys see anything in pics that are not correct please comment .
I finished off the sound deadening on areas that there was none or probably never had in the first place and kept the original which was in good condition in the floors . In these areas there was no rust or sign of it ( hot dry climate) so felt no need to remove existing .

Fitting the door trim took ages . Their is only one sequence which I learnt after stripping another junior . It's combination of starting with roof beading and rear window steel trim and rubbers . I bought an entire new rubber set from Classic Alfa and I see they have now a thinner profile for the doors . Apparently the older profile which all the agents sold here did not allow doors to shut properly .
Pretty interesting how the rear side windows hinge with their own clips so this was a definite entire parts replacement area . There are three clips with specific length screws .
Pic of the old man ( my dad) turning 80!in a few days time relaxing while taping and cleaning the harness . Actually quite a heavy job on the fingers to keep the tape perfect . Hope I'm still going strong at 80 :D

First pic is the junior in good company next to a very original Giulietta at AK classics . I have just moved car from AK Ckassics as Kevin Strapp has moved his premises to a little further out towards Little Falls -

Been a while since I have done anything on the Junior but did manage to put in a few hours earlier this month when I was in SA . I took the car out of staorage and put it in a comfortable sunny working area at my families home . What a change from the -4 degrees I had just flown in from .
My dad and I started getting as many refurbed and plated parts fitted starting with bonnet and boot catches to make sure the car could be closed up as I'm planning to get it transported back to paint shop in few months time for final polishing and the new windscreens to be put in . You can see the cracks in the old screen and no trim fitted yet .
Thanks again to Kevin( another one) at AK classics for refurbing boosters and plated parts .
Some pics and stories to follow plus four guard dogs !

I got the dashboard back and it's the first time I have actually seen a proper job on a totally cracked up dash . The guys who did it for me specialise in modern accident damage dashboards and airbags for the luxury German cars and they have an ISO 9001 cert which is atleast better from the previous attempts of heavy fibreglass and fake wrapping ( I'm guilty of on my race car ) . The dash was stripped down to its metal frame , refoamed and then covered with close as dammit texture .
Reminder pic of what it looked like to final pics

Before the dash was put in I had to check the heater mechanism cables were functioning , pipe work drainage from scuttle was connected and ventilation ducting in place as its a real tester on the back if you try do it afterwards .

Thanks goodness my original door rubbers were still good as its huge restorers nightmare of getting doors to shut properly with new rubbers . But fitting 105 door rubbers is a serios test of patience which took me ages as it fits into a double channel unlike the simple 116 cars . sa started test fitting my new carpets from Classic Alfa at same to keep enthusiasm going .
I got some new foam under carpet sound deadening but I will put that in once the seats are ready .

Cheers thanks ! If I had a full week and few spare grand at the moment I could finish it off . if If If ...... However My dad has fetched the seats and front door pannels which have all been done to identical pattern with the vinyl purchased at Classic Alfa UK . I would really like the bumpers to go in for machine polishing as my handwork does not bring it up to match the standard of the car . Maybe I can convince my body shop ( panel shop ) to remove them and get it done when it goes in next month .
Now I have to try save some money and plough into variable exhaust system for my road track car ( 3.7 gTV ) so Classic Alfa will be seeing less of me :(

I must admit to extreme jealousy.Your car is looking really good,Nice to have a vehicle in a part of the world where you don't even know to spell the word "RUST" .
I'm also jealous of your beautiful dogs. Are those Springers ?

Thanks Murray . These cars definitly won't rust due to salts on roads , cold and dampness however their is quite a lot of dust in the air which over long periods of time block up the cills . That combined with water even in best condition will start to corrode but if these cars are maintained with wheel arch liners cleaned out they simply outlast any coastal or damp climate car .
Yep those are four energetic " springers " that constantly are removing items from the toolbox and your clothing while working in and under the car .

One areas that took me ages was putting the window cable mechanism in especially when I had no cable length to work off . It was a lot of trial and error fitting as you have to be within 20mm on the 3m length otherwise you can't tension the cable on the door to test it . I used the aluminium head of a rivet to crimp the cable so it could easily be removed and did not damage the cable . Some pics to follow showing what I meant by rivet heads .

Yes I have to agree with your opinion of the experience.Last summer I foolishly agreed to help a friend deal with his Spider's window mech.It doesn't appear to be of the same quality as your GTV's but equally daunting.Pullies cables yuck.I'll take the relative simplicity of my GTV6 powered glass, slow but reliable and easy to fix.
Rather re-build an engine or tranny any day.
