The 'Bends', or have you ever 'pressed your head'???

Post by xrad »

I was rebuilding a 4.2 liter jag 6 for a touring car project when I get a call from the machine shop that the head is warpers....

So what to do....I called every shop in the greater cleveland ohio area and no one could help (oven too small, don't have right plate, it's a jag...etc...etc...)

Head was not out too much (?). I could get a .018-.02 feeler under a straight edge in the middle of the head (block side)

So I ended up using a 12 ton press(not all 12t's!), some aluminum shims, steel box bars, cast iron plates...and kinda bent it over my knee with a little well positioned heat at the thick mid sections. A few groans and moans from the block.

Three times the charm with slow cooling while maintaining the pressure.

It is not perfect, but was able to get it back to a hair over .006!

Mats, It was heated with close attention to the cam bores. They are in better alignment than the surface.
