Ah, this is a no win argument because the parameters are just too wild. Typical mileages may be 20k/annum for some but others like a friend of mine involved in servicing does over 100k/annum.
My home town of Brisbane covers an area of 1220 square kilometres. It is the largest single Local Governement in the Southern Hemisphere. Some people commute for85-90km just to get to work and do the same to get home every day. That's over 43,ooo just to tavel to work. Add to that the personal use of the vehicle for which we all use our cars for and you can see lots of k's adding up.

Like all cities, some drivers use public transport to work and use the car for other purposes and hence their averages are much lower.

As for hot air, well yep, I have been known to let a few rip occasionally...

the majority of people that commute that much in Holland are driving a company car with a tank card... so the company pays the petrol/diesel and the drivers probably aren't even aware of the prices the pay for it...

This is why the governement gets away with it, there are not enough people saying "enough is enough, we won't pay anymore". and the governement relies on the tax money. :?

I get 130 Euro a month as compensation for the 80 km a day. this is a fixed amount of money for the distance. when i got it the first time ( over 2 years ago) it already wasn't enough to cover the costs. since that time fuelprices have only gone upwards, something like 30 eurocents a liter, and my compensation stays the same... I'm seriously looking for a job nearer to home.

I just hate those taxes...

Gasoline / milk / wine / water prices in Southern California:

Gasoline prices vary by 5-7 (USD) cents per liter, depending on where in San Diego County you live (we are 125 miles south of Los Angeles), but here in La Jolla - the most expensive area:

Regular, 87 octane gasoline is about $1.05 USD per liter, of which state and
federal tax is $.1688 USD (16.1%).

Diesel is about $1.16 USD per liter, of which state and federal tax is $.1902
USD (16.4%)

2% milk is $1.32 per liter. Food is not taxed

A "decent" bottle of California Chardonnay or Cabernet is about $4-$6 USD
for a 750 ml bottle, plus about 8% sales tax.

Cheapest bottled water is $.58 USD per liter. Not taxed.

wow, you guys have it easy.
to top it off we have 25% tax on everything...

bought a "new" daily driver, Saab 9-5 2.0t. 7.2l/100Km so far, and gas is cheaper then diesel. nice.
nice to be able to walk two houses over and have acess to all info imaginable regarding service. :)

round trip to work, about 20km
fuel used, about 2.6 litres (at about 13 litres per 100km, which is what my daily driver (4 litre 6 cylinder) gets in traffic)
cost at AUD$1.50 per litre, about $4.00
annual cost, about AUD$1000
that's not so bad - maybe I should buy another 6 litre V8 while I still can
