Mclaren mP4 22 paint

Post by mjr »

Hi all, a bit off topic this query. But here goes anyway. I am looking for information on the metallic silver paint currently being used on the Mp4 22 car. ie any one know what the paint is? the technology? 2pac? celluslose, water based? is it laquered? etc or what its called?. I am looking to paint some stuff with the same effect. I thaught about contacting mclaren, but they will probably think Im a scuderia Spy!!

Is that a Vodaphone sponsorship colourscheme? If so, one of the v8 supercar teams runs the same "chrome" paint. It takes a week to paint a set of bodywork. Black undercoat, then the "chrome" coat. (I know the guy who does the carbon fibre work for them). I think it's a 2pac.
I'll see if I can find out what it's called/who makes it... I do recall something about it being horrendously expensive.

Yeah, sorry I wasn't clear about that, it is the vodafone scheme. black undercoat, thats weird for a chrome finish?. Any info would be great though. I dont care about the cost. I have heard a figure of $250 a litre mentioned somewhere, but hey, a litre of 2 pac goes a long way. You know the guy that does the carbon fibre work for them!? Damn...you should get him on some nice kick plates and stuff for your GTV :)

Its just like the "silvering" on a mirror is black.
I was actually supposed to collect some parts he's been doing some composite work on from him today, but one of the other guys wound up doing the trip.
I think it might be called ChromeFX by Alsa Corp?

I'll see what I can find out tomorrow.

I'm probably wrong, but i think its an Alsa product. The ChromeFX looks to be a single step paint.
Anyway, I'll see what I can find out tomorrow.

Ok, its either Mirrachrome by ALSA corp.

or possibly Ghostchrome by ALSA over a black base...

Either way, its a black base coat...

I actually visited the carbon fibre guy yesterday, he had some broken bits of Vodaphone sponsered V8 supercar bodywork in for repair, so I got to see the paintwork up close and personal (again). It's definitly Mirrachrome, which comes up really chromey by itself, but they lay a clear coat over the top on the Vodaphone cars that seems to dull the chrome a little and make it that surreal finish (they had a piece they'd peeled the clear off of and a piece that hadn't been touched yet).
Given that the paint on these cars is paid for and defined by Vodaphone itself, I'd lay money on it being the same as the McLarens.
