xrad's gtv6

Post by xrad »

Well, here we go again. Mario from fedex autotransport delivered to my door for a not outlandish fee a white 1985 gtv6. YES!

Not complaining here but item was not 'completely' described on the ebay sale (what else is new). Some things left out included sitting outside for quite a while collecting a hefty layer of crusty salt and trim rust a little more than can be seen in photos. Actually will require some home made parts welded into place.

major things included almost no brakes, the whole pedal box seems to move, clutch pedal useless unless pressed into the carpet. Big radiator mounted, but not at done well, leaky hoses. Bumpers bent......

Drive shaft wobling around like an upright washing machine (serious banging down there). Muffler touching plastic and melting it...

Front alignment scary off line...Starts right up but does not idle properly.

BUT, on the good side , plenty to say. Looks like this car came from a good home probably until the last three or four years where it just sat outside. There is almost ZERO wheel well rust, no undersurface rust to speak of. Interior still has original sunn roof surround handle. Front seats decent. ALL things electrical work. Carpet excellent. trunk excellent. New koni yellows. partial new exhaust (still leaking). very little valve noise or exhaust smoke.

So for the very reasonalbe price of 2600$ and shipping cost of 700$, I am very happy.
Now for the better news,

Good news is the 164S ~40,000mile engine I was able to buy in michigan from another alfa fanatic. VERY NICE! IT IS STILL SHINY (saves me on another 3.0 upgrade rebuild!)

I did find an intake manifold and 3.0 downtubes from Alfabb member (THANKS)
Just purchased standard upgrade stuff:
torsion rods, rear springs, brake hoses and pads, clutch master and slave, brake master, and a bunch of other parts (thanks Centerline!)

Oh yeah, the PO did manage to get a bunch of poly stuff mounted so that was nice!

Found a used Milano trans with 69,000 miles and some clutch parts. when I get some time, will tear all the old stuff out and put the new stuff in and get it over to the body shop...

CENTRO DOCUMENTAZIONE ALFA ROMEO (FGA) [centrodocumentazione@alfaromeo.com]

NICE! at least the assembly line workers were happy that day!

Ordered up some new suspension pieces including firm street torssion rod (originals are sagging and very soft)

new bushings, engine stuff, got a 3.0 ecu and big bmw flapper (will get haltech later after engine break-in)

bought a used but low miles milano trans with iso stuff still attached..

should be a fun build...

Lovely!! I've always wanted to import a GTV6 here, too bad that if I find one like yours i'll probably end up paying about 10.000 dollars put in here...import taxes...

wow, that's expensive. 968 in storage as I have a habbit of driving it off the road in winter.....This car is #77 of all 968's...pretty cool...FUN to drive..handles really well.

I redid the entire interior and engine bay and suspension and new trasnaxle...windshield...and brakes......etc...etc..etc..

but no more P-car pics after this...time to concentrate on Alfa again!

HAd some trouble with one of the PO's cooling set-up. Sheesh....one fan shaft loose wobbling like a top. no power to either. Hose set-up leaking when hot. PO had someone weld up a poor fitting.

The fans were held in place with white coat hanger wire!!! The Tropic air wiring was a mess.

So all of this came out tonight. Found an almost new GTV6 radiator and a garage of spares from a real nice guy in West virginia.

Also found out what was making the klunking noise...bad front guibo! that will be a fun job!

My pics are blue because of a freebie photo shrinker not working all the time.

Removed almost all the components for the AC. Box full of stuff that weighs 60 lbs!! All the fittings and bolts just popped open very easily. Had to cut one big hose that passed through wheel well.

All the parts look to be in excellent shape. Even the main lower compressor bolt was still shiny plated and came right out. Even the inertia switch is still attached and working! Nice getting a car that spent almost all of its life in Texas!

Unfortunately, I have found a number of small things done wrong , loose wires, broken bosch connectors... etc.
I would not want to be the guy installing this ac system at the dealer!

some valve cover work:

VHT crinkle paint in red looks great. Just need to bake them. Takes much effort to clean the covers and get them ready for paint. I have not decided on polishing the insignia...

Do it! Not much work and it will make it pop. I did both mine.

I would like to, but I don;t want to mess up the surrounding paint . The letters are raised slightly so maybe with a flat fine file. I polished the letters before paitning so the paint should come off easily...

Maybe I can dremmel brush them...

:D

I recommend a scotch brite brush to get the uniform brushed look. :)
