I was talking to my mechanic this morning. My clutch needs to be replaced, he claims that I should not be driving it or it may damage the housing. Parts are 1000 bucks, labour another 1000. Is this a reasonable price ?

Does it have to be am alfa specialist to do this job or can I get any other mechanic ....

You can do it yourself.for about $400. You can contact Andy at Performatek http://www.performatek.com/frOnlineCatalog.htm and have him reline your existing clutch. The instructions for a clutch change are at http://www.lalosgarage.com/Tech/MilanoT ... lutch.html

It is really not difficult. I did it 9 months ago. I sourced a used Milano single plate clutch as I had a twin plate clutch and had Andy reline it. Terry

Those prices are about right. The entire clutch assembly is now around $1000, and I am not surprised to hear that labor is another thousand. (At my shop it's less, but I am not in Canada).

I strongly suggest buying a performance clutch disk from Andy at Performatek and doing the job yourself. It will be very rewarding and save you about $1700!

Two Grand to fit a standard clutch... cough cough, splutter, choke

Last time I replaced a single plate in a transaxle, it cost me $120 AUD for parts.

MD, look up the price for the clutch assembly (not just the clutch disk). It's about $1000, oh , and then add the throwout bearing.

hey rooks, you shouldn't be watching my videos anyhow being under age and all..

I don't want to go toe to toe with anyone here. For a start I buy my stuff at trade and from the "right" outlets. Secondly we are talking AUD not USD. Finally, I just gave a complete new pressure plate and driven plate to a friend for free. It's not cause I am so generous....

All I am saying is to be vigilant about paying through the nose for stuff just cause you own an Alfa. When people hear you say its for an Alfa, for some reason they visualise telephone numbers instead of realistic prices.

All the more reason for learning how to do your own work. This and other Forums will help.

Other excellent vendors are Alfissimo http://www.alfissimo.com/ , Vicks http://www.vickauto.com/ and Centerline http://www.centerlinealfa.com/. If Andy relines the clutch he will also have it rebalanced which is critical as the entire unit must be installed as a balance unit. Terry

To replace the assembly with a new assembly, I can do it on jack stands in about 6 hours. That's with me on my back under the car. My mechanic replaced my clutch with the car on the lift, within 2-3 hours. At US$100/hr, I don't see why it should cost $1000.

A brand new clutch plate in Blighty (UK) will cost <£30; it is a very common item.

You guys need to compare apples to apples. Of course a clutch disk is a lot less than an entire clutch assembly.

Zamani, your mechanic replaced the clutch on YOUR car in 2-3 hours. Try it on a car that's lived in a northern climate for 25 years, that's a whole different ball game.
