Off-The-Shelf Alternator Upgrade

Post by GregoryV »

Okay, I know this is something so many of us have been after. Unfortunately, I don't have the answer but someone must. Lately I've read about a 164 alternator mod. for the GTV6, that with a bit of bracket banging and grinding can be made to fit and puts out the power. And, saw Greg Gordon's image of a BMW 735i alternator in place that he says is readily available and not expensive.

SO ... just what is the easy answer, ideally I'd be after a direct bolt in, maybe with some simple mods. A 90 to 100 amp unit is what would do it right? Don't want to have my current one rebuilt, and what about the voltage regulator? Anyone have the "easy" answer ... or at least half easy?

Anyone come up with anything since - will have to consider these ideas though.

I will get all the details from my father when I get home on Saturday. I really think the BMW 735i unit is the way to go. Auto Zone keeps them in stock and they are only $150 outright and $100 exchanged. They put out around 100 amps. Plenty for most of us. Best of all it looks like a factory installation, no making brackets or anything super complex.

Fitted the E34 535i alternator to one of my cars many moons ago.If I can remember, slight modifying of the lower mount-alternator side as well as top mount or adjustment side..
Its also rather large in circumference, nothing to worry about though.
Mine was the 120a/H unit..actually,still have it lying around here somewhere..will shoot a pic. 8)
French cars are shit and shit expensive to service and bloody awful and unreliable and expensive and friends don't let friends drive french cars and you wait years for parts.

Guys,
I agree with Greg that if you can lay your hands on an off the shelf Bosch unit that fits and provides the power then that's a smart way to go.In my case I was able to get an inexpensive 164 alternator and it has worked out perfectly.I've had it on for two seasons and have completely forgotten about low-voltage problems. Here's a link to my write-up.Scroll down for a bit of how-to.

By the way when I tackled this one I asked my alternator rebuild specialist about using the even more common GM/Delco units and he advised against it.Apparently they don't respond too well to working in really hot environments and given the proximity to the manifold they might not be very happy.

Post by Paul Bird »

Hi all, I would just like to know from what 164 should the alternator come from? A 164 3.0L 12v or 164 24v??? or doesnt it matter!

Thanks

I'm interested in retrieving this info as well.
Could anyone post the Bosch part number of alternators that fit?

Thanks
Lucio
