Crank position sensor mount

Post by Greg Gordon »

I just thought I would show our crank position sensor mount. It's very strong, you can easily lift the engine with it. It can be removed for belt changes and reinstalled without upsetting the adjustments. Overall I am pretty happy with it. We have a few variations, GTV6, Milano, with A/C or without...

The crank sensor mount is the most critical issue with SDS. If it vibrates, it's bad news, that's why it has to be so strong.

Is it more critical than on the Motronic V6?

(Repeat or do as I say at your own risk - be critical)

Jes: I suspect they are both equally critical, however it's a lot more trouble to adapt a toothed wheel to a 12 valve car. Of course if you are starting with a Motronic car you already have a toothed wheel and a factory sensor mount so it's a non issue.

Greg, how do you get a home signal from your quad setup for a six cylinder?

quality looks excellent by the way..

Wasted spark? Wouldn't need a phase sensor.

I figure if with a crank sensor this nice there woul be a home signal and individual port injection timing ;no teeth so count by magnets?

otherwise you would only need one mag ...??.. :?

what is really cool is the Haltech dual channel Hall sensor for crank position magnets:

Whoa, OK, I think I misread x-rad's question, and I am not familiar with the term "home" in regards to sensors. To clear all this up I will explain the whole thing.

The SDS crank position sensing system uses 4 magnets in the crank pulley. Three of these magnets are "trigger" magnets. The fourth magnet is a "synchronization" magnet. It only needs three triggers magnets for the 6 cyl Alfa because it fires two spark plugs at a time.

There are two pickups mounted on the position sensor. The first senses the syncro magnet and the other senses the 3 trigger magnets.

Obviously the magnets in the crank pulley have to be positioned in certain places in relation ship to TDC and certain distances from each other. The SDS computer can compensate for errors in magnet position to an extent.

In regards to our sensor mount, we actually have a few versions.
1. Milano with A/C
2. Milano without A/C
3. GTV6 with a Milano A/C compressor
4. GTV6 without A/C

We are not going to bother with making a mount for a GTV6 with a GTV6 A/C compressor since those compressors suck.

I am so happy with this mount I am upgrading older versions I sold to this newer type entirely at my expense. The old one worked well but it required the sensor to be realigned after a belt change.

I should add, this is all explained very clearly in the SDS instruction manual. It's also really easy to tune this system.

Greg,The sync trigger is more commonly known as a "home" trigger.

Thanks Barry. Automotive terminology varies so much it gets confusion.
