Jim, I was talking about the MSD 6A, amplifier that goes upstream of the coil. My carran beautifully when 3/4 plugs had ~5mm gap due to totally eroded center electrodes...

Don't you all go crazy now with the springs and weights! I have 3 ignition systems on the car: Motronic (which requires and empty distributor, only needing the rotor) the Bosch module (module under coil from L-jet fame) and the JK200 CD ignition. Here's how it goes: I can either use (a)std Motronic alone, (b) motronic signal feeding the JK200 for a much greater spark,(c)regular mechanical advance triggering either the Bosch module or the JK200. Get it? The distributor advance mechanism is used when I don't use Motronic, the ecu supplying only fuel. I can't print it any simpler. I have a set of numbered connectors which are arranged for the desired system.
Now the locking of the mechanism: I have 3 V6 distributors with springs, weights and a pulse generator which were used in the ancient V6's. I took one apart yesterday and bent the weight travel stop pegs all the way inward, locking the weights in their innermost position, creating a 'solid drive' distributor. Took everything out of the distributor (pusle wheels, coils, etc) so it now looks like a regular empty Motronic distributor. The most important part now is to properly align the rotor in relation to the cap terminals....its not so simple! Best way is to turn the engine to ~30* BTDC and set the rotor so its almost aligned with the cap terminal but alittle bit before! This will ensure that a proper path will exist during high rpm /high load when the ecu advance is ~30* or so. In all other cases, the rotor will be aligned but a little after the terminal, as with lower loads spark scatter doesn't happen. Remember, a 1" spark gap inside the cap may be easier to jump than a 0.035" gap inside a high pressure environment like the comb.chamber. Now you can see why MSD sells larger distributor caps for high power cars with high power ignitions!! They want the largest possible distance between the cap terminals.

I was very certain you wouldn't be that stupid to leave the old dizzy on with the Motronic, but thought i should mention it anyway.

Back in 1985 whe I was running some tests on the JK200 latest version, I broke off the ground electrodes from the N2C plugs in the 2liter gtv and ran full bore uphill. It went to ~4500rpm and then misfired, so I figured the design was more than good! With no ground electrode the gap is ~3mm, quite a bit! The CD in my car had ~495V primary voltage charging a 2µF capacitor. Thats 245mJ and you'll be hard pressed to find a more powerful CD even today. Spark duration (single spark) was (is) 450µs with the Marelli BK3 coil, exceptionally long for a CD. This is the same box I use in the V6 now.

No worries about my armpits mate. Rock on down. We are all civilized here in Oz. Everybody has a backyard garden hose so I shower once a month whether I need it not !!!

Speaking of schnitzels...I know its only December, but is anyone planning to visit the Ring in May?? I thought I'd mention it so you'd at least start thinking about it. Granted, with the economy being what it is (and getting worse by all accounts) its just a firm thought at this point. I know MD won't make it as he'll be busy playing with his garden hose....

Looks unlikely at the moment I must say.
Car is far from race ready, they planned a race late in May and my boss is trying to set me up with a "small job, after hours".
On another note, the current economy is actually working for me, intrest goes down on the house mortgage and fuel is cheap as hell (1Euro/liter).

Sad to hear that. You really feel something is wrong when you start to wonder about the feasibility to continue or limit your hobbies! True, when everything is falling apart around you, you don't feel much like having a party any more.

I'm having my vacations in may so it is very much feasable, i'll be based in brussels probably as that is where my brother lives, I know I couldn't make it this year, but the company wasn't doing very well....but i'll be there for some schnitzels next year!

My plans for the 1.8T are a little upset, the chassis specialist is involved totally with new racecars for the next season and can't take mine in until late January. In this case, I found some other guy to do the chassis. The sequence is: engine out and at home to be rebuilt/upgraded, at the same time car goes for chassis strengthening and engine-bay painting, engine goes back in and off to the painter for all outside work.
